In Germany, employees are in principle insured in the statutory health insurance system (SHI), as well as apprentices. This pertains to a compulsory insurance. The insurance cover starts on the first day of employment in Germany. The obligation to have health insurance expires should your income in 2017 be above 57,600 Euro. You can then be voluntarily insured with the AOK. Whether voluntary or compulsory, nothing changes for you – your insurance cover is the same at the AOK.
The special feature: In Germany the employee and the employer share the contribution costs. The employer pays this directly to the AOK. So you do not have to take care of anything.
