Sometimes it can't be prevented: Treatment in a hospital may become necessary in case of severe illness or an accident. Like in Britain, you have to be admitted by a doctor, except in emergencies. AOK members have a large choice here in Germany: They may freely select a clinic from all those licensed to provide medical care as part of a statutory health care insurance. The health care insurance takes care of the costs for the medical treatment, nursing, accommodation and catering services. Unlike in Britain, you have to make a small supplementary payment for hospital treatment in Germany. Simply present your AOK health card on admission to the hospital.
You must only present your AOK health card for your hospital stay to be settled. The hospital will contact the AOK directly, so you do not receive a bill for your treatment. There is a surcharge for a hospital stay incurred for all statutory health insurance companies. The member share is 10 euros per day for 28 days at most within any calendar year. Children and youths under 18 years of age do not pay this surcharge. And by the way, any additional payments made in the hospital are considered for exemptions from paying the surcharge. Should the family doctor or the specialist think that a treatment in hospital is necessary, he will fill out a hospital admission form. You can select the clinic freely. You will receive the highest level of medical attention and treatment in the hospital.
